After having had this system for a week, I am now utterly impressed with it. Once you get all the speakers calibrated, replace all the speaker wire with some 14 gage, and get your room setup properly you'll find this system blows you away too.

Strait out of the box you will not be impressed. But that will be the case with any sound system. They need to be properly setup.

I HIGHLY suggest replacing the wire with METRA Ltd S14-100 MTA 14 Gauge Clear Speaker Wire. It really does make a world of difference. I was thinking the speakers were not as clear as I would have liked, until I installed the new wire. Now everything is extra crisp and clear.

After doing tons of research, Onkyo was the only one I could find that consistently got great reviews. I can see why!

Sony BRAVIA DAV-HDX589W 5.1-Channel Theater System

I purchased this unit to complement a Samsung LN52a550 HDTV. Didn't feel there was enough sound from the unit to complement the samsungs outstanding video. Shopped for reasonably priced HTIB units and decided (despite cautions that most didn't perform) to give this unit a try. In my wildest expectations I never thought this unit would perform up to its marketing description. Placed in a den of that is approx. 15 x 25 and playing a Dolby DVD, it placed me in a cinema that provides sound effects that truly astounded. I'll qualify this by saying that I'm a audio neophyte but for this sound at this amount of money I am truly impressed.

Be aware that this Sony unit is being used with a Samsung HDTV and consequently the transition between DVD usage & HDTV usage (must change input source) is a bit bothersome. I found that in order to obtain full surround sound from the unit when receiving audio only from you TV (not from the DVD) you must purchase a digital optical cable.

Hope I haven't misled any one but if you select this unit I don't believe you'll be disappointed.

As a real estate investor and author myself, I read a lot of real estate books. Many, if not most, are written by folks who do not invest in real estate themselves; they only write about it. Berges is not one of them. He knows his stuff and it's clear that he practices what he preaches. I have read three of his books and, I must say, he's one of my favorite real estate authors. You can trust what he says. Experienced investors may want a bit more detail from Steve, but what he does say is accurate and safe. This is a good book on buying apartments. In fact, in my own book, "Investing in Duplexes, Triplexes & Quads," I list the best books I've read on different areas of real estate. This book is the ONLY book I recommend on investing in commercial multifamily (ie, apartments of 5 units and up) properties.

Having given those accolades, here are a few of my constructive criticisms:

1. On pages 37 and 38, Steve gives nice charts illustrating the long-term financial benefits of investing in multifamily properties. On page 39, however, there is an error in referring to the big numbers shown. The reference is made to Investor A's "equity" of $2.1 million and Investor B's (the multifamily property investor) equity of $92 million. I just don't think Steve caught this, but those numbers don't refer to the investor's equity, but to the fair market value of his collective assets (his properties). The investor's equity might be in the range of 20% of that. I do like the charts, however, and I used a similar analysis in my recent book. One other note on the charts - they presume selling and buying exactly at the end of one year - a difficult task as Steve would surely admit. On average, I think 18 months to two years is a better time frame for flipping apartments.

2. Refinancing - Steve didn't give a chart showing the long-range effect of the "buy, hold and refy" strategy (using proceeds to buy again, but retaining the first property). In addition, Steve only mentioned the general banking guideline that you can only pull out cash up to 80% of the new appraised value (i.e., the bank has an LTV of 80%). However, you can get around this. I've done it. It requires a second lender giving a second mortgage, with a CLTV (combined loan to value) of up to 90%. As such, you can pull out much more cash.

3. GRM - gross rent multiplier. In his financial analysis section, Steve doesn't give much detail or provide real life examples on this crucial analysis factor. Granted, the cap rate is the analysis primarily used for commercial real estate, while the GRM is the one used for residential multifamily (2-4 units) real estate. Since many owners and selling brokers will "fudge" on expenses, a cap rate can be very hard to verify. The GRM, however, is fairly simple - just look at the lease agreements.

4. Lack of coverage on residential multifamily apartments. In fact, this is why I wrote my book on this topic. If Steve had covered it here, I would not have written mine. I like Steve's writing style and he knows his stuff. But for investing in small multifamily properties (certainly on residential, but probably up to about 10 units), we really have to cover valuation and selection of properties using the GRM. That and I felt like the "buy, hold, and refy" strategy needed much more coverage.

But for investing in commercial multifamily properties, I recommend this book as the only good one on the market.

6 Reasons to Review Your Business Terms and Conditions

In the recession, more than ever, any well run business needs to ensure that they are getting paid on time. Cash is king and to get your money in your bank account at the earliest opportunity, you need really clear terms and conditions. You may be surprised by how little it costs for an experienced business solicitor to draft tight terms and conditions for you. Here are some issues you and your solicitor may want to consider:
1. Make sure that it is your terms and conditions that govern the performance of the contract - not those of your client or customer.
2. Make clear when payment for goods or services is required - this is well worth checking. You may find your current payment terms are far too generous. It's not uncommon for businesses to state payment is due 30 days after the end of the calendar month when the invoice was sent - that could mean a delay of up to two months before you can even chase for your own money. Reducing your credit period to perhaps just 14 days from the date of invoice could make a huge difference to your cash flow.
3. Don't forget that you have a legal right to charge interest on unpaid bills - it's always good, however, to include details of such interest charges in your terms and conditions.
4. Don't rely on a verbal contract - it might prove binding. Be aware that verbal contract agreements are enforceable in certain circumstances. You will be much better off if you make sure that your written terms govern any agreement.
5. Check that your terms and conditions are both clear and easy to understand. Whilst you may be able to rely on your terms and conditions in any court case, the value of a transaction may mean it is simply not worth taking legal proceedings - and the whole point of clear terms and conditions is to avoid problems arising in the first place.
6. Ensure that your client or customer is aware of your terms and conditions. There is little point in hiding your terms and conditions away where they will never be read. Making sure your clients or customers are fully aware of your terms and conditions will significantly reduce the risk of any subsequent disagreement between you.
Making sure that you have the right terms and conditions for your business is a critical element in preparing to make the most of the economic recovery. If you haven't got these six points covered, do have a word with an experienced business solicitor.

However, there has been little careful analysis, especially by Western scholars, of the heritage of the Korean economy in the traditional and transitional periods from which it launched into a modern phenomenal economic success. One of the major weaknesses of a few studies abroad evaluating the Korean economy between 1876 and 1945 often has been the one-sidedness. The time has come to assess and reassess Korea's heritage of economic transformation fairly and objectively with an open mind by a Korean scholar who has been educated and held his professional career abroad. This book is a study of transformation of the Korean economy from the time of the opening of the hermit kingdom in 1876 to the end of Japanese rule in 1945, focusing on capital formation, economic growth, and structural changes. During the 70-year period, the country under siege of foreign powers transformed from a static, and agrarian economy to a semi-industrial one that has evolved in three distinct stages of economic transformation, namely, the traditional economy before the opening of the country to the outside world, the transitional economy between 1876 and 1904, and the colonial economy under Japanese rule during 1905-45. The approach in this study is more behavioral and analytical (without being mathematical, statistical, or technical, but with supporting quantitative data) than historical. Although narratives of Korean economic history before 1945 are scarce in English, an effort is being made in this study to devote as much space as possible to the analysis of the economy based upon available data with minimal historical description. This study reveals a number of significant, though perhaps not all unique, patterns and characteristics of capital formation and economic transformation of Korea. I I Loved this book. It is well outlined and well written. And it is very topical in today's business marketing world where small businesses can use YouTube to enhance their online marketing efforts significantly. The book has 16 chapters divided into the following five parts:

I. Marketing your business online with YouTube (1-3)
II. Producing Your YouTube Videos (4-8)
III. Managing Your YouTube Videos (9-11)
IV. Working with YouTube Video Blogs (12-13)
V. Promotion and Monetization (14-16)

And each Part is concluded with a "Profile" which applied what had been discussed in the chapters preceding it. I found these profiles very helpful and informative. Not too long ago I read and reviewed "Show Me: Marketing with Video on the Internet" (ISBN: 1884230016). I had high hopes for that book and wanted it to be like the instant book being reviewed. Unfortunately it fell short of my expectations. However, after reading "YouTube for Business" this other book might be a good companion read?

Internet marketing today seems to be about putting together successful ways to generate traffic to your company or nonprofit Web site. You can do this by performing Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques. You can do this by creating lots of content pages in your Web site. You can do this by writing articles and posting them on free article-posting sites online. Each article will have a by-line directing traffic back to your site. You can generate traffic by creating one (or more than one) blog which will direct traffic back to your site. And after reading this book you can generate traffic by creating simple videos you post on YouTube that will direct viewers back to your Web site.

The really neat thing about YouTube traffic generation is that it not only generates traffic, but it allows you to get your face and voice in front of people as though you were standing there talking with them. You can become three-dimensional rather than just two.

My favorite part of the book was Part II where the author goes into some depth into how to produce videos for posting on YouTube. And it is these same videos you will want to paste into your main Web site and your blog posts. I highly recommend this book for just about any small business owner who wants to make a name for themselves better and quicker. 5 stars!

I am reading a lot, on various marketing topics, and now, i am at the stage, where I can distinguish between really honest, helpful and hardworking books on subjects - especially on marketing.
Such an honest book in 2009 in virtually impossible to find! No really! Author does not tries you sell his stuff. Author does not asks every second page to subscribe his newsletter of whatever. Instead - he packs book full with VALUABLE info, on just exactly what the topic is - how to use youtube in your marketing matrix.

And one more thing - if you afraid (same as I did), that author will pack 3/4 of book on useless topics on what youtube is, and how to use it and bla bla bla - then don't! I was such a positively surprised that this book is all packed with valuable info, covering as technical issues, and then goes giving you most valuable that can be - examples and tips on what and how you can put on youtube. Just read the book - stop a little - and think how it apply to your business - and a spark happens in your mind. Thanks to author I had a lot of a-ha moments when I was reading his work.

I recently purchase the Nikon Coolpix L20 after lots of shopping.

I have used only Olympus cameras only up to now.

This time I wanted a smaller pocket sized camera, that still took the AA batteries, and that still gave great photos with all the features I was used to.
This camera fit the bill!

It takes 2 AA batteries, inexpensive SD memory cards and yet still delivers fantastic photos.

I have already tried all the features, and was completly happy.
I love using the different scene settings, and could not live without the video feature.
Both still and video capture worked well in both bright light and low light.
The sound playback via the camera is hard to distinquish (live music), but fine once uploaded.
I didn't really require the smile feature, but tried it out on my 3 year old, and was blown away....it really works!
The blink feature is also quite ingenious. The camera actually asks you if your subject blinked when they do, but not when they don't. This is particularly handy when taking photos of children. I would have loved this feature when I was still my daughter's yearbook photographer.

What can I say, fabulous price and awesome quality!!!

Comparibly priced camera's that we have used, produce grainy shots.....but have not found this with this camera at all.
I would recommend this camera to anyone!

I own allot of point and shoots and I think the folks who gave this camera a less than 5 star rating must enjoy looking at horrible photos from other digital camera manufactures.
The beautiful red colored body of the L20 is unisex and it's absolutely right in line with the jeweled quality of Nikon. I was able to use the camera right out of the box without having to read the instruction manual, it's that easy to use. You should however read the manual since there were allot of little gem features the camera had that I didn't know about.
When I loaded my photos onto my PC with the supplied USB cable, the first thing I noticed was how natural the colors and skin tones appeared. White balance was incredibly accurate. The focus and detail were right on target and in some close up portraits the image had the appearance of a professional camera set in aperture priority. Macro mode and optical zoom worked flawlessly with no noticeable distortion or noise.
The camera feels good in my hands and the controls are easy to find without having to take your eyes off your subject. The large 3 inch LCD view finder was easy to see in bright light. There is also a brightness control for the view finder to increase bright daylight viewing. This camera does not need an optical view finder. I always thought having an optical view finder on a point and shoot was dumb and Nikon picked up on that.
The Nikon L20 comes with a one year manufactures warranty - "Not that you would need a warranty for a Nikon camera" - Impressive warranty details, I was amazed that any camera manufacturer would offer a one year on a point and shoot but Nikon has such a good reputation and so I doubt very much that you would even need to use it.
In a nutshell, I love this camera so much that I would recommend this Nikon L20 to my friends, family and anyone else looking to buy. It's a real beauty!

This is a superb little pocket camera that is all Nikon from start to finish - and the finish by the way is beautiful.

I've had the camera a couple days and I just don't want to put it down! I have a NIKON D50 SLR for those really precious jobs, and I wanted a small camera I could have in the pocket sort of "all the time." I tried several small ultra-compact cameras and I hated them all. Too many weird buttons that made quick operation all but impossible without carrying around a telephone book sized manual. I mean, after all, what's the purpose of a pocket camera, if not to whip it out on a whim and get a quick picture?

Here's three things I really like about this baby.
1. There are four key buttons on the top deck: Power, Shooting mode, Review pictures and the shutter button. Pull the camera out, hit the power button and you can take a picture in a second. No fumbling, no hunting for the right button. It is logical, easy to remember and doesn't overwhelm you with a billion choices before you can take a picture.

2. It takes AA batteries. Cool, I have boxes of AA and I don't need YET ANOTHER little charger! Plus, there won't be a bum lithium battery to try to replace in two years. AA batts are cheap and in this camera they last a long time.

3. The LCD screen is HUGE, bright, and gives a great preview or slideshow.

Here's the one thing I don't like: It's a bit fatter than my wife's 20mm Olympus. It's more like 1.1" thick. Not unmanageable, but it's as large as you'd really want for this kind of camera. It's the AA batteries that make it a bit thicker. BUT---shooting with this gem is 10X faster and easier than with my wife's compact Oly - (which is the most confusing menu system I've ever seen on any product in my life. )

Oh, the pictures? So far I think they are fabulous. This is a 10MP camera - - how much do you need for a pocket camera? With a 4GB standard SD card you can get like 1000 pictures! That's a long party!

Everything about this camera feels like a well made sports car - I may just pack up that big SLR and ......well, maybe not. But this will get plenty of use.

Trip Advisor is a "Win Win" For Travelers and Businesses

When I went on vacation to Disney about 6 years ago, I remember using Trip Advisor for the first time. The website was cluttered and the reviews were not very helpful. I didn't pay much attention to the website until about 2 years ago when I started working for a hotel company out of Destin, FL. I started to noticed more and more travelers tell us how they are using Trip Advisor to find restaurants, attrations and lodging. They read the reviews and took the advice from other travelers as if it was given to them by a best friend or family member. I didn't waste any time and started to analyze how Trip Advisor works so I could bring more business to our hotel. After weeks of talking to other hotels and reading articles from other web marketing professionals, I came to a simple conclusion... Trip Advisor can only benefit your company if you offer excellent value and service!

Take the reviews seriously and make adjustments based on what the customers are saying. I must agree that Trip Advisor has a great way of ranking the businesses which give the Travelers a great way to find the hot spots in a given area. A high rating on TripAdvisor could mean hundreds of new customers and an increase in revenue! Most hotels are listed automatically, but if you notice your restaurant, hotel or attraction is not listed, it is VERY IMPORTANT that you take the next hour or so and sign up and create your listing (it's free too!).

Once you get listed, make sure you do a few things to increase your popularity index (this will increase your ranking).

1) Post a TripAdvisor widget of your business listing on your website and any other web pages (including facebook and myspace). This will bring traffic to your Trip Advisor web page and increase your popularity index.

2) Ask your customers to make reviews of your business. DO NOT write your own reviews. I've seen listings go from #1 to #20 within a week because of fake reviews. Trip Advisor knows when listings are fake and they will penalize your business for this.

3) Add pictures, videos and content to make your Trip Advisor web page stand out. You want people to stay on your listing as long as possible.

4) Don't get discouraged with a bad review. You will not have all perfect reviews no matter how great your business is! If you get a negative review, make sure you respond to it as soon as possible. As a manager, you are allowed to write a response to any negative review about your business.

The mattress arrived in about a week, which for shipping a 90lb mattress from CA to the suburbs of Boston MA is perfectly acceptable. FedEx Ground is the cheapest way to ship and the only one that makes sense. There was a small tear in the plastic wrap and a corresponding dirt mark on the cover. Not a problem. I'm sure it will come out when I wash the cover. Mattress Shop did get my address slightly wrong which delayed delivery one day. I had it delivered to my office and they left off my company name. The delivery driver made no attempt to find me among the half dozen companies in my building. Since I had been tracking the package, when I saw the problem, I called FedEx and gave them the omitted company name. FedEx notified Sleep Shop when the mattress could not be delivered and Melanie from Sleep Shop called me the next morning and would have corrected the problem, had I not already done so.
The mattress is rolled up and compressed. It's the width of the bed by about 18 inches across. It's awkward to carry. Better done by two, but I hauled it into my third floor condo with some effort. Set up is easy and it is cool to watch the mattress expand. There is a smell, but it did not bother me at all and already seems to have dissipated.
I've never slept on a foam mattress before and it is incredible. With my lower back supported, I wake up with no stiffness. I've only slept on it for two nights, but I'm already used to it. I can understand what some have said about the mattress being warm to sleep on. My AC is usually on from late Spring to Fall since I dislike high humidity. I dont think it will be a problem. I am going to buy a mattress pad since removing and washing the mattress cover looks like I will be a major hassle. That should keep things cooler.
As someone who planned on spending $800 or so on a spring mattress and ended up with memory foam for half that, I am ecstatic.

Previous version of this mower (1998-2000?) used a motor that required brush maintenance (and replacement if worn out). The newer version (2001 & after) uses a brushless motor and the brush drawing in the 1998 user mannual is no longer shown in the latest mannual.

I recently opened the motor assembly to see if there is dirt inside. The mower was made in Hundary a few years ago. The brushless motor was made in Germany and labeled "13 Amp" even though the mower is rated at 12 Amp. This might be part of the reason why this mower seems to have a bit more power than the the current Black & Decker 19" mower, assuming the B&D mower uses a 12 Amp motor as advertised and not the same "13 Amp" German motor.

The cord keeping system is a nice feature that makes mowing faster and reduces the risk of damaging the cord while moving.
Standard 120V AC outlet has limited power so it is difficult for the manufacturer to make this mower (or the similar B&D) larger and more powerful without using 240V AC (maybe safety concern?)

Five Tips for Buying a Mower
Choosing a lawn mower is a matter of sifting through a bewildering array of types, power ratings, and fuel sources. Let’s break it down a little to make the process easier.

What types of walk-behind mowers are there?
There are four basic choices: push reel, electric, cordless, and gas. All have strengths and weaknesses.

Push reel mowers are powered by you. They’re quiet, they don’t need cords or recharging, and they don’t pollute. But on large lawns, you might not want the workout you get when using a push reel mower. They also tend to be less effective on grass taller than two inches.
Electric mowers need to be plugged into an outlet to power them, which means you’re constrained by the location of power outlets, the length of your power cord, and any obstacles that may snag the cord. If you have a small yard but don’t want the forced exercise of using a push reel mower, an electric mower may be for you.
Cordless mowers are powered by a rechargeable battery. You don’t have to deal with the hassles of keeping a cord plugged in, but battery life becomes a constraint. Depending on the battery capacity, the size of your yard, and the height of your grass, you may not be able to complete your mowing job on one charge.
Gas mowers offer the most power, which is best if you’ll be mowing tall, dense grass or if your yard is larger than 2,000 square feet. But you will have to keep gas and oil on hand as well as keep the engine serviced.
What do all the power measurements mean?
All that matters to you is whether the lawn mower’s blade will spin fast enough to cut your grass. Unfortunately, mowers are rated in far more technical terms.

For gas mowers, there are three power measurements you may see:
horsepower (hp) refers to the amount of power the engine can produce;
torque is the amount of horsepower that is transferred to the blade;
cc (cubic centimeters) is another to measure an engine’s power based on the displacement volume of its cylinders.
There also are two types of engines: two-stroke (also referred to as two-cycle) and four-stroke (or four-cycle). Conventional wisdom is that two-stroke engines offer more power but also more pollution.
For electric and cordless mowers, power often is measured in volts, amps, or watts. To satisfy your inner techie, here’s how to calculate the horsepower:
39. Multiply the volts by the amps to get the wattage.
40. Divide the wattage by 746 to get the horsepower.
More horsepower doesn’t always mean more cutting power. That’s why, starting in 2007, most lawnmower manufacturers began rating walk-behind lawn mowers in torque power or cc’s--not horsepower. If torque isn’t available for a gas mower, higher cc figures usually mean higher torque (and more fuel used per stroke, incidentally).
However, you don’t want to buy a mower based on the power measurement alone. Make sure it has the features, warranty, and quality of reviews you’re seeking.
What features should I look for?
Cutting Deck
This refers to the blade housing. The wider the cutting deck, the fewer passes it will take to mow a given area. However, consider how many obstacles there are in your yard. The wider the deck, the tougher it may be to fit the mower into tight spaces.
Mulching and Bagging
Want to collect your clippings? Choose a mower with a rear- or side-bag option. Want to leave clippings on the lawn as fertilizer? Get a mower that mulches. A "3-in-1" mower will mulch, bag, or side-discharge.
Wheels
Larger wheels mean easier handling, especially over rough terrain. If you can, go with at least 7-inch-diameter wheels in the rear--larger if your yard is hilly or uneven. Some higher-end mowers have front wheels on casters, which gives you an extremely tight turning radius.
Height Adjustment
Most mowers allow you to adjust the distance between the blade and the ground. Think about how much range you really need.
Safety
Many newer rotary machines are available with a lever or bar that must be depressed to keep the mower running (some models include a handy blade-brake that lets you release the lever without killing the engine).
Also, look for models with a rubber flap at the back to block objects thrown from the blades. You should always wear safety goggles when mowing and follow all the manufacturer’s safety instructions regardless of the mower you’re using.
Batteries
If you’re buying a cordless mower, think about how long it will run on a single charge. Most batteries take several hours to recharge, so you want to make sure it’s going to get the job done before it runs out of juice. As a rule of thumb, a typical 24-volt mower will run up to one-and-a-half hours and cut up to a third of an acre; a 36-volt mower will go for three hours and cut up to a half an acre.
Cord holder
A cord holder is useful for keeping the cord of your electric mower out of the way when you make turns.
Starters
Gas mowers are available either with recoil (pull-cord) or electric starters. Newer recoil motors start much quicker than those you remember from summers past. However, go with electric if you can afford it: your mower will start with the push of a button or the turn of a key.
Self-propelled or push?
A self-propelled mower moves forward without you having to push it. All you have to do is steer. If you have a relatively flat lawn, save a few bucks by skipping this feature. However, if your landscape has a slope or an irregular contour, a self-propelled model may be the best choice. Rear-wheel drive tends to offer better traction.
Variable Speed
If you want a self-propelled mower, look for models with variable speed. This feature allows you to make adjustments within a continuous range so you can find the exact speed that’s comfortable for you.
What servicing and maintenance is necessary?
Always buy a mower that comes with a manufacturer’s warranty and follow the manufacturer’s routine maintenance instructions for
Cleaning the mower after usage;
Keeping the blade sharp;

I have a short driveway and about 60 feet of sidewalk, so i couldn't justify spending $600 or more on a gas-driven beast of a snowblower. I got this machine after our first snow in late December. Since the east coast has been hogging all the snow this winter, I hadn't had a chance to use it here in South Dakota (usually the harsh winter capital of the nation) until mid-February. Now that I have, though, I'm very pleased.

As mentioned by others, throwing snow to the side only moves it about six feet. This worked fine for my sidewalks (the 12-inch cut let me get the whole sidewalk in three furrows, which took about five minutes).

A pointer for anyone clearing a small amount of snow: I worked out a decent system for the driveway where i start down the middle and throw snow a few feet to each side as I work my way to the edges. By the time I get to the edges, I'm throwing the accumulated pile off onto the grass. This clears the driveway rather well, though obviously it wouldn't be as useful in 20 to 30 inches of snow as some other people have seen this winter.

Power cord management is the only real downside to this device. I find myself spending a pretty good amount of time tossing the cord out of my way as i go and down the driveway. It's a minor annoyance that i still hope to find a solution for.

In all, i can now clear my drive and sidewalk in 20 minutes or so rather than the 45 to 60 minutes it took me by shovel. it also fits neatly in my crowded garage. A great little product.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The build quality is striking. It is very well packed and instructions are the best I have seen of any consumer electronics product including previous Canon products. There is a "kickstand" for keeping the printer open while inserting the 5 ink tanks and closing it reveals that it has a gentle piston like a luxury car's hood. Other details include a mechanism on the output try that automatically opens when printing to keep papers from spewing onto the floor. There is definitely some weight to this device and it is much larger than a printer you might get free with a PC purchase. Still I said to myself as I unpacked "was this really just $199?" as I had been looking at more expensive models and was concerned the quality would suffer to provide the MX860's price point.

PHYSICAL SETUP
Okay, I was flat out scared to insert the print head and break the caps off the five delicate ink tanks to insert them, but I think the instructions were just trying to make a point. In any case, do prepare your setup with lots of light as the print head insertion process is both dark and covered in warning stickers. I had no problems however because the on-screen instructions were clear (both visually and intellectually) and after printing a three step printhead alignment, output quality was definitely promising. I went with the wireless setup so I left the included USB cable (thanks Canon!) and phone lines (don't intend to fax) in the bag. The built in paper tray (letter size only) hides away neatly under the printer and there is a second input on the back of the unit for other media, plain paper, envelopes, or photo paper (hey a free 4x6 sample pack is included, cool!)

NETWORK SETUP
I installed the OS X drivers on a MacBook and it was very easy. Note that there are different instructions for 10.4 and 10.5 which are the only two versions supported as of Feb 2009 (Vista, XP, and 2000 are also supported, though it is unclear if 64-bit drivers are provided for those OSes). Software is as straight forward as the printed instructions. I did not install Canon's included photo software as I am expecting iPhoto to handle those tasks.I put the printer in Wireless LAN setup mode. A couple items to note though: Canon does proide for totally wireless setup though Wi-Fi Protected Setup though I went with the more straight forward USB connection to get the printer setup on the wireless network (turns out that included USB cable was helpful). The second item to note is that the software required a reboot which I am not accustom to with OS X software but none the less went along with. It was very cool to see the results of a two minute Wi-Fi quality test that shows the signal strength from base station to printer. (I was in the green zone from about 50 - 60 feet from the base station through two walls.)

PRINTING
Printing is so subjective I'm not going to try to quantify it. I'll say that it looks very crisp to me - not laser printer crisp, but every bit as sharp as I expected. Have not printed photos yet. The printing is about moderate in speed and as loud as my $300 HP All-in-One from 2004 but lower in tone so not as annoying.

SCANNING
Wireless scanning was what I was very interested in and the MX860 did not disappoint. Can scan from the glass, or the Auto-Document Feeder (ADF) and even do front and back duplex scans from the ADF. The awesome on-screen menu system is intuitive and allows you to choose your target wireless device to scan to. Scanning was faster and quieter than I expected and the resolution is truly excellent for an All-in-One. This is not a dedicated scanner and it won't scan a legal document, but when you want to quickly front and back scan those rebate forms before you send them in, this will be a good friend to have. I also look forward to batch scanning old printed photos for import into iPhoto.

OTHER FEATURES
I haven't had time to test printing from a memory card, duplex or ADF copy/print/scanning, faxing or receiving a fax, or Bluetooth (didn't purchase the optional module for $30). But what I was keenly impressed with is the crisp, intuitive menus. Very easy to navigate and follow. Things are where you think they will be. I wanted to turn down the volume of the keypad confirmation beeps and pleasantly had a whole menu of selection to do so for various volumes including off, as well as different settings for key press or alarms. The attention to detail and user experience really shows.

I want to save you the time and uncertainty in choosing the best affordable DSLR. For those considering the Canon EOS Rebel XS, the Olympus E-510 or the Nikon D40 / D40x / D60, I believe the Canon XS is the best choice. Also, at the price difference between the XS and the SXi ($150-200 as of December '08), the XS is an excellent alternative--both take exactly the same high quality pictures, save the 2MP difference, which is negligible at the end. Please note that the XS's new lens kit comes with the better quality EFS 18-55 Image Stabilization lens (they are better engineered); and that Canon is offering nowadays generous rebates on telephoto lenses when coupled with the purchase of the XS (I bought mine with the entry-level Canon EF 75-300mm III lens with a generous instant Canon rebate. Don't buy from anybody different from B&H Photo, directly from Amazon, Adorama, Buydig/Beach Camera; stay away from Broadway Photo and TriState).

Canons are popular for the excellent image processing. Nikons for their Nikor lenses. Olympus, some say, for the color of some of the pictures they take.

The Olympus E-510 has important flaws, e.g., the average performance in high ISO speeds and highlight blowing. Also, its inconsistency with good results is worth noting.

The Nikon D40 lacks important features, e.g., image stabilization in their kit lens. The D60 is lacking the high picture quality ratings of the Canon XS. Both Nikons are nice looking, which is a selling factor I usually consider; but picture quality should be your top criterion for the long run.

Don't go through the extensive research I have already done (months, and intense debating). The Canon XS is a winner (specially with the new IS lens kit), even more with its current price (Dec. '08: $480). It is feature rich (you can even add 3 of your preferred defined Picture Style modes), good/professional looking (black body), even the sound of the shooter is nicer than the others. Bottom line: Excellent picture quality, high ISO/low light remarkable performance, and relevant features and space for customization make the Canon XS a winner for months and even years to come.

I spent several weeks reviewing the REBEL XS vs it's many 10 MP adversaries, I even checked it against the ultra zooms as I wanted the convenience of video as well, but too many good things stood out with this camera and so I decided upon it. I bought the rebel XS and after days of dirt testing this camera I've found it a beautiful experience.
Now I'm a professional videographer attached to a tv station in Trinidad & Tobago, my purpose for this camera was the need for a quick sharp still shot camera that would be impressive under low light and still capture impressive portrait shots to be used for my website and for large prints. I didn't want to shell out over a $1000. US for a camera body.
What is tagged by Canon is true: The full auto mode is truly accurate and gives excellent shots always, it makes photography so easy for a beginner or intermediate. The portrait mode isn't blurry, images are clean, nicely toned, excellent in quality for large size prints. The P ( program mode) I like alot at first because this mode sets exposure so nicely I found it addictive. I shot alot of night pics of cars on a freeway, with bright, sharp, lively colours emerging. Night pics at 800 iso had very very very little noise, and I mean I was searching the pics on 15" monitors for reason to complain, but was really impressed.
The auto focus is really quick. Th XS comes with "only" a 7 point auto focus system compared to the XSi 9 point, forgive me when I say there may be no need for another 2 points when the camera focusses so quick and so accurately. I have not gotten a soft image when shot with the auto focus operating.
Now for those point and shoot cams that boast about "face detection"....5 faces...6,7, some even 15. I also have a 10 mp ultra zoom, this simply matters little if not at all, if the focussing ability of the camera is poor or average, and given the "average lens" quality they're made of.
I have learnt clearly that a 10 MP ultra zoom simply cannot compare to a 10 MP D SLR...chalk and cheese.
I also bought the Tamron 70mm - 300mm, F4-5.6 telephoto/ macro lens. No vignetting at either end of the lens.
Auto iso is simply magnificent, have not taken a shot where the camera over estimated or underestimated the iso levels.
The Manual mode of this camera is the most impressive for me. The rebel XS via various magazine testing has come up faster than it's other 10 MP rivals when it comes to fps shooting, and burst images. It really does shoot 3 fps consistently, it shoots 2.3 fps in low light, worst case is over 1 fps all at 10 MP quality.
I haven't used a lower quality since, given I bought a Transcend 8GB SDHC card storage is not an issue.
Most of my shooting has been at night, for the little done in daylight, it has been amazing. Colours are very bright, depth of field very very nice. Macros works well. Image optimizer simply shocked life out of me. I was in a shaded area and without flash it really improves the subject without over blowing the background, stuff that is almost impossible on point and shoot cams.

Stuff I disagree with from the "reviews" : 1- "The camera feels cheaply built"....simply wrong, nothing is shabby, buttons are actually easy to press, doesn't have cheap clicks to them, the lens mount has a secure feel to it, and a proper snap when it is set. Battery compartment is certainly secure. Your finger must intricately open the door for entry, won't be an accident issue. Rubber door at a.v. ports snap in well. Rubber grip is firm enough, smooth enough to not irritate your hands.
2- " XS is "overpriced" compared to the XSi.....Xsi shoots slower than the XS, XSi picture quality is equal to the XS even though the XSi is 12 MP. The XSi may be the 3" LCD and a few other upgrades, but these upgrades don't add up when the picture is taken and the quality of both cameras match alike. I may have chosen the XSI if I wanted to spend the extra $150. u.s but for the lesser price, I'm yet to regret.
3- "The XS "only has a 2.5" LCD compared to a couple of it's rivals having 3" LCD's". I can see every thing clearly with this screen, even with Histograms, and grids onscreen. If LCD's get much bigger then canon may need to install a tv tuner as well....the 2.5" is more than sufficient.
4- "The XS doesn't have SPOT METERING compared to the XSi, so this is a big issue"- haven't encountered a reason to complain yet, after 500 night shots and 200 day shots.

THE DOWN SIDE: the EOS software for uploading the photos to computer, and remote controlling the cam via computer is AWFUL. It's a task to upload, as it is beach balling when you hit "upload". Digital professional software is non responsive. I have not been able to use the software past the install point. Mac version here.
Better use i-photo and photoshop.

I highly rate this camera, and as a videographer who's accustomed to t.v. broadcast quality the REBEL XS is worth it, and since canon is so intent on pushing the rebel XSi they have significantly lowered the price on the XS.....I recommend people buy the XS and get a good lens with the discount earned. The trick is in the lens and the user, and lesser the camera.

This is, by far, the most robust external hard disk I've ever owned. And, when I say solid, I mean almost 3 lbs. solid (I didn't put it on a scale but it feels that way), 100% metal casing, likely to survive a building collapsing on top of it. Given that I bought it for backups, not for travel, I actually like it this way. I like it very much.

It's probably helpful to enumerate the features I feel are worth being aware of before one buys it (and I shall answer any additional questions if you drop a comment, to the extent that I can):

# Heavy, solid build, almost bullet-proof enclosure.
# 8"x4"x1" rectangular prism (these are not exact measurements but I'm confident it's close.
# USB port for data transfer, cable included.
# External power supply.
# Silent run - you can't hear it spinning unless you place it close to your ear.
# Cool - after one night of uninterrupted operation it was barely warmer than room temperature.
# Not a speed demon but I backed up 50GB in something like 20-30 minutes.
# Formated as FAT32.
# Comes with no software but it was instantly recognized by both Vista and my PS3 (more about that later)
# There is no manual to speak of - and no manual is needed.
# One year warranty.
# 30-day free tech support during the warranty period where the clock starts running after the first call to WD.
# Lacks the (to me annoying) carnival lights that some other drives have these days - only one blue LED, on the back, blinks when read/writes are performed.

I can't think of anything bad to say about this device. I went for the 1TB size because I wanted to back up several smaller computers on it and my 320GB PS3. For a stress test and if you are going to use it with XP or Vista you may want to reformat the disk as NTFS - Microsoft will be spinning your disk for many, many hours and, if you bought a dud, chances are it will stop working during the 10-12 hours format process. Or, you can check the 'fast format' option and the formatting will be done in less than one minute.

After the overnight test was passed, I partitioned the disk into 4 using Vista (no problem whatsoever) and I formated 3 of them as NTFS and one as FAT32 (get FAT32FORMAT off the Net because Microsoft's utility does not work on a 300GB partition). Backups ran flawlessly with Microsoft's backup interface and backing up the PS3 was incident-free too - it instantly recognized the FAT32 partition and I have a nice PS3 backup now.

I highly recommend this drive as a backup device that does not travel a lot.

P.S. - if my review seems to be coming from someone who uncritically gushes over little gadgets, do check my other reviews of electronics or my reviews in general. I am trying to be as objective and as factual as possible and, in this case, I believe, we have a good, solid device that fully meets expectations.

While not absolutely silent during access (and especially on start-up), you'd be hard pressed to hear it otherwise.
The one way I can be very sure it is spinning at the moment is to put my palm on it to sense the tiny vibrations.

It gets only warm to the touch after long and heavy access.

Power efficiency.

No power switch to bother with. Just connect power adapter and USB cable.
It powers up automatically when connected via USB to a running computer, and auto shuts-down when disconnected.

When connected, it auto spins-down after 10 minutes of inactivity and auto spins-up when accessed again.
These are out-of-the-box with my XP and NSLU2 devices (uNSLUng 6.10 firmware on flash drive).
No need to install any utilities or write spin-down scripts.

Great value.

I am getting a second one to backup the first one serving its duties as my always-available network storage and server (via the NSLU2).

I had the 55-200mm non VR version for about 5 months, sold it to essentally recover my cost, and bought the VR version as a replacement. The non VR version was very compact and light, and produced excellent photos, but the slightly larger VR version is so much more usable I don't miss the other lens at all. The VR works as advertised and allows me to take pictures at 3 times or more lower shutter speeds than the non VR version. While I would love the 18-200mm VR for the convenience, I will never be able to justify the $750 price, so my 18-55mm kit lens and this lens will likely cover my needs as long as I own my camera. I also seriously considered the 70-300mm VR, but couldn't accept twice the price for only 50% more reach. And at twice the length of the 55-200mm non VR version, it would be too awkward for me to carry around. I am very satisfied with this 55-200mm VR lens and if you are considering it, please give it a try. You will not be dissapointed.

This lens is sharp even at wide apertures, the VR (image stabilization) works great, autofocus speed is more than acceptable, and it it is very light and compact. The fact that it costs $250 and has effective VR is pretty amazing - no other company offers a lens with this feature for anywhere near this price.

As for image quality, search the various internet photo sites, such as dpreview and nikonians for sample photos taken with this lens by real users. The results are impressive! My copy produces similar results. The previous reviewer must have a bad sample.

Of course, the lens is slow (like almost all consumer zoom lenses), in that its widest aperture is smaller than a professional zoom or prime lens, so it's not a good choice for action photography in lower light conditions (like indoor sports without flash or outside sports at dusk). But a fast telephoto zoom will cost at least three times as much and weigh a ton.
I give the lens 5 stars based on a combination of image quality, value, and compactness/lightness.
